How to choose the right florist for your wedding flowers

The flowers that you choose for your wedding day can play an intrinsic role in enhancing the special meaning of your commitment. Depending on the amount and usage of flowers that you choose, there's an endless list of possibilities: bridal bouquet, bridesmaid bouquets, button hole arrangements for the men, table arrangements for the reception, arrangements for the church or ceremony, bridal tossing bouquet, small lapel bouquets for the mother of the bride etc! Apart from thinking about the colours and style of the flowers that you're going to use, you might wish to also think about the type of floral scent that you'd like permeating the ceremony or reception!

Florists can be exceptional at helping you categorize and outline your feelings, ideas and personality into flowers. This creates mood when you are entertaining your guests. Florists can also help to point out things that you may have overlooked.

In order to make your wedding flowers experience as least stressful as possible, you need to first make sure that you're using the right florist for your wedding flowers! Although professional florists can certainly enhance your special day with flowers, the florist you choose must know your style, criteria and your budget. We've included a few things to think about below, that will hopefully help to save you time, money, and unsatisfactory results from your florist on your wedding day.

  • Do your research before you start speaking to florists! If you're not sure what floral effect you're looking for, flick through some of the wedding magazines or search online for ideas and speak to married people about what worked best for them! Researching different flower trends can give you more creativity with flowers.

  • Start to take note at florist and flower shops of the different types of flowers and flowering plants that are available at varying times of the year. If you are aware of what flowers are in season, your purchased flowers will stay strong and stay healthier for longer.

  • Discuss with the florist what you wish to achieve with your flowers (design, size, colour, perfume etc). Try to have an idea of what you would like... many people don't know what they require and then they can be left feeling disappointed with their investment in their wedding flowers! Keep up good communication with your florist, as they need to know what you like or dislike. If your florist suggests a theme that you're not comfortable with, be honest about it and let them know! It'll help reduce the stress levels later on! A good florist should build on your ideas and create them into beautiful flowers for your wedding day.

  • Something important to remember is also that you should know your florist's style! Florists and flower shops usually have distinct style details that can be seen in their arrangements and bouquets.. and even in the overall style of their florist shop. Many professional florists stick to one prominent style or topic. If you are unsure about their style, ask to look at photos of other weddings or special events that they have helped with. It is important to ensure that the florist you choose has some experience in events and/or weddings.

  • Try to make sure you have an idea about where your flowers are going to be placed, and exactly how many arrangements (e.g. table decorations) you're going to need. This planning will help you and the florist achieve the floral designs to perfect your wedding day.

  • Don't be shy to obtain quotes from several different florists! When discussing your budget with a florist, be very firm about how much you'd like to spend. Only you know how much you are willing to spend on your flowers. If you feel the quote that a florist gives you is unreasonable, search around your area for other possibilities. It is always better to find a great deal and a florist that will take your flowers seriously. Keep in mind that a knowledgeable florist should be able to suggest new flower ideas within your price range.
